The original hospital built in 1921 by Emslie Nicholson was named for the prominent practitioner and Chief Surgeon for the state during the Civil War Dr A Wallace Thomson who practiced medicine in Union for a number of years Although Dr Thomson never practiced at the hospital named after him his hand washing techniques used to help lower infection during the Civil War helped to modernize medicine In May of 1925 Nicholson donated Wallace Thomson Hospital to the City of Union
