Founded in 1891 by the Vermont State Legislature the Vermont State Hospital serves the needs of mentally ill Vermonters unable to receive treatment and care in other settings
Today the Vermont State Hospital VSH serves adults with serious and persistent mental illness as part of a comprehensive continuum of care
VSH provides a level of care other hospitals cannot provide It is a safety net not a last resort It also provides secure observation of individuals sent by the courts for determination of competency
Vermont State Hospital affiliates with several colleges and universities and the Department of Psychiatry at UVMFAHC to train students in psychology activity therapy social work nursing occupational therapy and other human services VSH also operates its own training program the Vera A Hanks School of Psychiatric Technology
