History

A Brief Review
Construction of the Towner County Memorial Hospital first started on land donated by Phil and Julianne Belzer in 1952 The original 26 bed hospital included surgery a nursery dietary department laboratory radiology laundry and a convent on the second floor Towner County Memorial Hospital was dedicated on May 26 1953 Cost of the entire building project was 475000 The people of Towner County raised 100000 towards the new hospital and the remainder of funding was provided by the order of the Sisters of St Francis

In May 1957 a new chapel and chaplains suite was completed

Due to demands of community health care needs a decision was made by the Sisters of St Francis to nearly double the size of TCMH with an addition that would include a new wing of patient rooms an ambulance garage emergency room new laboratory and radiology rooms The addition was dedicated in May of 1968

With the rising cost of health care and the inability to recruit physicians to a rural setting the Sisters of St Francis were faced with the decision of trying to sell the existing hospital or to close it altogether

On July 1 1992 the ownership and direction of Towner County Memorial Hospital was changed when the citizens of Towner County pulled together This new path would insure the people of this area access to health care well into the future With new state and federal regulations on handicapped accessibility it was decided that construction and renovation was needed

On May 11 1995 a ground breaking ceremony was held Construction began on land donated by the Terry and Babe Belzer family that included a new medical clinic dental clinic emergency room xray suite physical therapy room nursing station a drive through emergency garage laboratory medical records and birthing room In addition to the new construction the existing facilities have been renovated creating a medical center that meets and exceeds all the standards in the industry today
