History
The History of Thomas Hospital
In the late 1950s a group of community leaders recognized the need for a hospital to serve Fairhope and the surrounding area A volunteer committee quickly formed and began taking the necessary steps to make that happen
The hospital opened its doors on September 8 1960 with 36 beds and eight physicians Thomas Hospital continued to grow with the community and add such service lines as a stateoftheart birth center radiology endoscopy and inpatient and outpatient surgery facilities The hospital opened a complete cardiac catheterization and vascular lab in 1997 and an open heart center in 2002
Thomas Hospital merged with Infirmary Health System to become a part of Gulf Health Hospitals in 2005 In 2009 the hospital doubled its size with a fourstory 130500squarefoot expansion The first three floors include an emergency department with 28 treatment rooms as well as medical and surgical units with 64 private patient rooms
Today Thomas Hospital is a fullservice awardwinning hospital with 150 beds more than 1100 employees over 200 physicians and some 500 Auxiliary volunteers that delivers firstclass healthcare to the Eastern Shore
