Montgomery Hospital is the oldest general hospital in Southeastern Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia to provide healthcare for Norristown and its surrounding communities At the time of its founding the Reading Railroad had not yet been built and the closest hospital was in Philadelphia a days travel away Accidents in the quarries mills and factories in the area demanded immediate medical attention The original hospital was located in a vacant school at Powell and Basin streets in Norristown Originally named quotCharity Hospital of Montgomery Countyquot the hospital opened its doors on January 1 1891 with a staff of six

The Hospitals modern history began with its 50th anniversary in 1939 when the first section of todays existing building was completed Over 600000 was raised by the community to construct the new hospital Additions in 1948 1957 and 1978 saw the hospital grow to a total of 210 licensed beds A 600 space parking garage was added in 1985 and a Professional Building was constructed in 1986 to house physician offices the Montgomery Cancer Center and the Medical Centers expansive outpatient rehabilitation service
