What is Acute LongTerm Care
Acute longterm care hospitals recognize the unique medical needs of the acutely ill patient with multiple complex diagnoses Patients admitted to acute longterm care facilities are often transferred from the intensive care units of other hospitals The less restrictive setting of this facility allows a family member to stay with the patient unless the patient is in the specialty unit where visiting may be limited Under rigorous federal guidelines only a few hospitals nationally have been licensed to provide care for patients requiring intensive medical care for extended periods of time

Services of the Mississippi Hospital for Restorative Care
The Restorative Care Hospital provides patients six to eight hours of professional nursing care per 24 hours Physicians round at least once daily Physical therapy speech therapy and occupational therapy are available for patients within the patient care setting and are initiated during the acute phase of illness to speed recovery In addition social psychological and spiritual needs of patients and their families are addressed as a part of the patients plan of care

The Restorative Care Hospital is different from rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities The acute and complex nature of the patients diagnoses combined with the continuing need for intensive diagnostic andor invasive procedures prohibits the patient from being able to undergo the physical challenges of a rehabilitation program Skilled nursing facilities do not have the professional staff technology or support services required of acute longterm care patients

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Patient Care
To manage the complex care required by acute longterm care patients the skills and knowledge of professionals in many medical disciplines are needed Each week representatives from each discipline of the Restorative Care Hospital staff meet and discuss the progress and plan of care for patients Specific interdisciplinary care plans are updated to reflect the progress of the patient
