History
Planned with boldness and imagination the 10 hospitals that made up the United Mine Workers of Americas Miners Memorial Hospital Association MMHA were a striking innovation and introduced new services to the Central Appalachian coalfields in the mid1950s The system soon became a model for similar healthcare organizations across the country The MMHA system was such a rarity that one publication described the newly opened hospital locations as quotthe 10 places where hospital and medical care history will be writtenquot Today the health system now known as Appalachian Regional Healthcare continues its mission in the mountains by offering residents of Eastern Kentucky and Southern West Virginia a local option for the most stateoftheart technology and advanced quality healthcare services
