Maui Memorial Medical Center MMMChas a long and proud history of serving the Maui Community It originally opened in 1884 as quotMalulaniquot Protection of Heaven by Queen Kapiolani In 1927 the County of Maui assumed financial responsibility for Malulani Hospital In 1952 a new 140bed Central Maui Memorial Hospital dedicated to Maui s fallen veterans opened its doors

In 1956 with the closing of Paia Puunene and Lahaina plantation hospitals all acute hospital care was consolidated under Central Maui Memorial Hospital In 1963 the hospital changed its name to Maui Memorial Hospital and in 1966 operations were transferred from the County of Maui s purview to the State of Hawaii In 1998 the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation was created by the Legislature to oversee the administration of MMH and the other 11 rural hospitals then under the control of the Department of Health Division of Community Hospitals In 1998 Maui Memorial Hospital was renamed Maui Memorial Medical Center to reflect the broader range of services it offered

MMMC employs nearly 1200 employees and boasts over 200 attending physicians The hospital is also supported through community donations to nonprofit organizations MMMC Foundation and Hospital Auxiliary

A new wing was opened in November 2006 The 75000 sq ft Kahului Tower has four levels and added a new Critical Care unit a new Ambulatory Surgery Center a new PhysicalOccupational Therapy unit as well as a 24bed MedicalSurgical unit With the addition of the new wing the total bed count for the hospital is 231 and many of the existing floors on the Wailuku Tower were upgraded concurrently

The MMMC Emergency Department ED is the second busiest in the state and was recently upgraded and expanded in 2008 The project added 6200 sq ft with 9 examtreatment rooms an additional triage room and a larger and more enhanced waiting room

In 2008 the hospital hired its first cardiovascular surgeon as it began ramping up to offer a fullservice cardiology program It is expected that with the addition of another surgeon and interventional cardiologists that the program will be up in running sometime in 2010

In conjunction with that project a new Helipad located on the MMMC campus is being constructed in 2010 When finished the emergency services helicopter will save valuable time by landing at the hospital

MMMC received the Get With The Guidelines SM Heart Failure Silver Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association in 2009 The recognition signifies that MMMC has reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients with 85 percent compliance for one year to core standard levels of care as outlined by the American Heart AssociationAmerican College of Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for heart failure patients
