History

History
In 1978 Mammoth Hospital was conceived by a concerned group of citizens They formed the Mammoth Hospital Auxiliary to create awareness raise seed money and to hopefully pass a bond measure to build the 20000 squarefoot hospital needed to support the growing community After countless meetings thousands of volunteer hours and two failed bond elections the 2 million general obligation bond finally passed on the third attempt and Mammoth Hospital was born But there were immediate problems Serious political infighting among the communitys physicians a divided hospital staff and administration and poor financial performance marred the hospitals reputation
and created a lack of community support and trust After a very rocky sixyear childhood the failing hospital was adopted by Centinela Hospital in Ingelwood California under a lease agreement with the hope of bringing professionalism and stability to the troubled child of the Mammoth medical community

Centinela hoped to expand their excellent sports medicine program and become a leader in the treatment of winter sports injuries They hoped to build the esteem of the young hospital and grow it into something we would all be proud of However the advent of managed care a slumping California economy and intense competition in the Southern California marketplace were creating huge challenges for the nonprofit that diverted its attention and resources Good parenting takes focus and consistency The logistics of managing our small hospital in the remote Eastern Sierra were tougher than any anticipated Centinelas leadership lost interest in the outreach parenting strategy and in 1994 gladly handed the keys of the teenage hospital back to the Healthcare District at the end of their 10year lease With only a 15 market share for inpatient hospital admissions in Mono County Centinela predicted the adolescent hospital would languish and die within three years

In 2003 Mammoth Hospital celebrated its 25th anniversary Mammoth Hospital is now a vibrant and healthy young institution that has survived its ups and downs This institution stands as a tribute to what a small community can attain in quality health care service through sound local governance providing a clear vision and a unified team of professionals and dedicated communityminded staff who are mission driven
