Johnston Health is an evolving health care system serving Johnston County Its roots lie with Johnston Memorial Hospital which opened in 1951 with 100 patient beds and a pledge to make health care accessible to all residents regardless of ability to pay Through the years the public hospital has expanded adding patient rooms and services and recruiting doctorsall to keep pace with the health care needs of a growing county

Today the hospital has a new nameJohnston Medical CenterSmithfieldto reflect its modernday position as flagship of the health care system The hospitals commitment to providing quality care is stronger than ever In the summer of 2007 Johnston Health began the largest expansion in the hospitals historya 138 million investment in new buildings and equipment

In all Johnston Health is licensed for 155 acute care and 20 behavioral health beds With the tower expansion the state has allotted 24 additional beds bringing the total to 199
