At the turn of the century there were fewer than 80 million people living in the United States Eight thousand cars traveled less than 10 miles of paved roads and firstclass stamps cost a penny apiece The average worker earned 1298 per week and could expect to live less than 47 years and Mrs Emma Smith decided that Frederick City needed a hospital A determined civic leader Mrs Smith was able to rally the community to the cause and in July of 1901 the corner stone for Frederick City Hospital was laid Just 10 months later on May 1 1902 the hospital opened its doors They have remained open every moment of every day since

What began as a 2ward hospital with an accident room for emergencies has grown into a stateoftheart healthcare facility with one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the state of Maryland Frederick County is the second fastest growing county in Maryland with an estimated population of more than 233000

For over 100 years Frederick Memorial Hospital has been caring for the healthcare needs of an evergrowing community As we enter our second century of service and bring to the community a new stateoftheart facility Frederick Memorial Healthcare System pledges to remain true to those values and ideals so eloquently expressed in the simple words or our founders vision In the late 1890s as Emma Smith began her personal campaign to build a hospital in her home town she solicited funds with this simple statement of her dream to provide a place that would care for the sick comfort the injured and provide peace of mind to all who live in a town called Frederick

Upon these principled words Frederick City Hospital opened its doors in 1902 Frederick Memorial Hospital simply remains and will always be a place to care for the sick comfort the injured and provide peace of mind
