The hospital is easy to access from Junction 1 of the M5 and is close to road metro and rail links Originally an addition to the West Bromwich Union workhouse in 1884 it was then known as the Hallam Hospital and became Sandwell General Hospital after being rebuilt during the 1970s Although most of the buildings used for patient care have been constructed during the last thirty years a few surviving buildings from the former workhouse still remain on the site
