About Us
The Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust was formed in 1991 and manages a portfolio which includes an acute hospital five community hospitals and a wide range of community health and social care services
The Trust currently provides a wide range of local community general and specialist services to the residents of North Devon and Torridge District Council areas a catchment population of 157000 2010 midyear population estimate Office of National Statistics
The populations of North Devon and Torridge District Councils account for approximately 94 of the patient flow to the hospital with the remaining 6 of patients coming from neighbouring commissioning areas of the rest of Devon Cornwall and Somerset as well as visitors to the area accessing emergency care During the summer holidays there is a significant increase in activity from holiday makers This influx means the Trust has developed services with inbuilt flexibility according to demand
In October 2006 the community hospital services and community services were transferred to the acute trust The remaining community services including health visiting and childrens services were transferred to NHS Devon As a vertically integrated Trust since 2006 our organisational form is almost unique throughout the NHS managing both acute and community hospitals and adult community nursing services for the population of northern Devon
This integration was further enhanced in April 2008 with the establishment of integrated management of adult community health services and social care provision through cluster management arrangements aligned to primary care services in northern Devon
