Description

The Sankara Rural Eye Hospital is located near the temple town of Srivilliputhur around 70 kilometres south of Madurai Our stateoftheart facility is oriented toward providing patientfriendly care Our trained and service oriented physicians possess the clinical and surgical expertise to provide medical and surgical care for all ophthalmic conditions and diseases

This institution has been established to provide quality eye care to the Southern Tamilnadu It was inaugurated on February 4th 2004 by Sri VijayKumar IAS Collector of Ramanathapuram District and Sri Mohamed Aslam IAS Collector of Virudhunagar District

The institute would operate from the renovated hospital campus handed over to the trust by Dr Vivekananda Raja and Family The hospital activities are being supported by philanthropists Mr Dasi Bhudrani international service organisations Sight Savers International and the National Programme for Control of Blindness

Dr Vivekananda Raja after completing his post graduation in the year 1979 was involved in a project on corneal mycosis fungal infections He realized that most patients if treated early could have been prevented from going blind Also he realized a majority of the patients were from the rural belt Poverty ignorance and poor hygiene couple with poor medical infrastructure prevented early treatment

With support from his family and a budget of Rs1 lakh he established the Krishnankovil Rural Eye Hospital The location was chosen for the centre to be in the centre of the rural belt This allowed a better uptake of the services Over the years the centre grew to a 50 bed facility with a surgical theatre All along Dr Raja was conscious to maintain the rural ambience of the centre to ensure patients did not hesitate to utilize the services

A bachelor he appreciated the work of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust and to perpetuate his mission he handed over the infrastructure to our trust Today he oversees the activities of the hospital as a well wisher and patron
