Description

Around 30 years ago the hospital handled 12 to 15 deliveries daily but today the numbers have gone up One doctor can attend to a maximum of 25 patients per day but the situation is such that each doctor has to attend to 40 to 50 patients on an average The hospital has 12 staff members which has been the same since the 1980s According to doctors the hospital lacks staff to counsel pregnant women

To cater to the present needs the hospital requires more specialists nurses and assistants Nurses play important role in a hospital but here out of 250 sanctioned posts for nurses there are just 60 posts filled Apart from this the hospital is also facing a shortage of GroupD employees This has handicapped the doctors since these posts are vital for smooth functioning of the hospital This will be brought the notice of the director said Dr Krishnamurthy superintendent of Cheluvamba Hospital He said efforts are being made to fill the vacant doctors posts adding that the hospital will get more equipment in the coming days

quotEven if we come in the morning we need to wait for a long time for consultation It is high time the government appointed more doctors and also came out with a few more wellequipped hospitalsquot said Gowri an outpatient who was saying how pregnant women are made to wait in a long queue

quotWe have already started recruiting nurses and in the coming days more doctors will be appointedquot said Dr Geetha Avadani director Mysore Medical College and Research Institute

Built in 1880 the 24bed hospital was then called Vani Vilas Hospital It was upgraded into a 200bed hospital in 1939 and renamed Cheluvamba Hospital The hospital was expanded in 1954 with the addition of a women and children block Now it is a 400bed women hospital
