BISHOP BENZIGER HOSPITAL belonging to the Diocese of Quilon is situated at Beach Road Kollam It has got a commendable record in the field of medical service Bishop Benziger Hospital the first private hospital in Kollam town with inpatient facilities was founded in August 1948 by the late Bishop Jerome Fernandez Thuppasseril to perpetuate the memory of his illustrious predecessor Archbishop Aloysius Maria Benziger He believed that every medical care institution is a Temple of God and therefore the best professional competence coupled with love and compassion should be the touchstone of every person taking care of the sick and the suffering patient From very small beginnings the hospital has grown into a 550 bedded multi and super speciality centre of medical care The hospital which is climbing the steps of progress offers quality services in the areas of all broad specialities and some higher specialities in tune with the larger christian goals of the institution

The service of the hospital is blessed with the supervision of religious sisters They belong to the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Missionary Sisters of St Theresa Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions Sisters of St Dorothy Daughters of the Sacred Hearts Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy and Sister Adorers of Blessed Sacrament and of Charity

At present we have a panel of 52 eminent and dedicated doctors 45 Religious Sisters and 450 other staff including nurses working in this hospital

History

To perpetuate the memory of his illustrious predecessor Bishop Aloysius Maria Benziger Bishop Jerome Fernandez the first Indian Bishop of the catholic diocese of Kollam had the idea of erecting a befitting memorial With the concurrence of the faithful of the diocese a decision was made to build a hospital Bishop Benziger Hospital was thus established in a fouracre plot situated in the heart of Kollam town The hospital started functioning on 17th August 1948 the anniversary of the death of Bishop Benziger It was the first ever private hospital in Kollam town The formal inauguration took place on 8th December 1948The Hospital is owned and managed by the Latin Catholic Diocese Of Quilon
