History

Our History
St Michaels Centre was opened in July 1981 under the sponsorship of the Anglican Roman Catholic and United Churches At that time we had 40 intermediate care beds and 40 extended care beds

An expansion completed in March 1992 added an additional 88 Extended Care beds in the new A Wing bringing our bed count to 168

In 2001 in response to a growing need in the Burnaby community for Hospice beds we shifted our focus and joined with the Fraser Health Authoritys Regional Hospice Palliative Care Program to create a Hospice Unit within the Centre This initiative necessitated the closure of our 40 bed intermediate care unit and the complete renovation of our D Wing The result which was completed in May 2002 was a new 16 bed selfcontained Hospice Unit on the lower floor and a centralized Administrative area on the upper floor and a total bed count of 144 beds

In 2005 renovations were also completed on selected areas of B Wing to give it a more modern look

In 2006 St Michaels Centre celebrated its 25th anniversary
