Located in the heart of Edmontons city centre the Royal Alex serves a diverse community stretching from downtown Edmonton to western and northern Canada We operate 678 beds and care for 450000 patients annually We are proud to employ over 4800 full and parttime staff

The RAH is home to the Womens Health Centre the Regional Eye Centre and the Aboriginal Health program in addition to a wide range of child adult and geriatric programs and services The Alex also houses the regions largest Medicine Program with 227 beds accounting for over forty per cent of the regions inpatient programs

The Royal Alex is one of the provinces leading and largest surgical hospitals more than 28000 surgical procedures are done annually The Royal Alex also has a lead role in the development of minimally invasive surgery a rapidly evolving technique that helps patients heal and recover faster and return sooner to productive lives

The Royal Alexs Cardiac Services program is nationally recognized for its innovative work in the nonurgent treatment of heart disease including being the first in North America to perform a coronary angiogram on an outpatient basis The program also has the largest angioplasty volumes in North America for a site without cardiac surgery onsite

As a teaching hospital the RAH has strong affiliations with the University of Alberta Departments of Ophthalmology Obstetrics and Gynecology and Family Medicine


History

Since opening its doors more than 100 years ago the Royal Alexandra Hospital has benefited from the contributions of thousands of individuals and organizations in the community The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation was established in 1984 to focus community support on the Hospitals priority needs

Although founded in 1984 the Foundation did not begin active fundraising until 1991 That year the Foundations first volunteer Board of Directors was appointed who then hired two staff to manage fundraising activities

In its first year of fundraising the Foundation raised 200000 By 2002 the Foundation had raised more than 18 million Amazingly as of June 2008 the Foundation has raised more than 30 million on behalf of the Hospital and its various initiatives of excellence
