About the HSC
The Health Sciences Centre is the largest health care referral teaching and research Centre serving residents of Manitoba Northwestern Ontario and Nunavut Located on 32 acres of land in central Winnipeg the Health Sciences Centre is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Canada and a major referral centre for complex health problems requiring expert consultation and sophisticated investigation and management Designated as the Trauma Centre for Manitoba the Health Sciences Centre is also the Centre for transplants and for most hospitalbased pediatric care in the Province Highly skilled teams of professional staff provide acute care and continuing care to the ill and injured

Historical Background
The Health Sciences Centre was established in 1973 through an Act of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba The Act brought together several of Western Canadas most respected health care institutions each unique in its own history of service The Winnipeg General Hospital The Childrens Hospital of Winnipeg The Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital and the DA Stewart Centre Respiratory Hospital

The purpose of the merger was to produce global hospital planning uniting these facilities under a single administration A separate affiliation agreement was signed with the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation CancerCare Manitoba

On April 1 2000 the Health Sciences Centre was amalgamated with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority WRHA and since has been governed by the WRHA Board of Directors The Health Sciences Centre Act was subsequently repealed by the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba and the Health Sciences Centre became an operating division of the WRHA
