LMH was officially opened on 22 April 1959 by its namesake the then Minister for Health the Hon Sir Lyell McEwin With only 49 beds LMH admitted its first patient five days later on 27 April 1959
LMH is one of only two tertiary teaching hospitals in South Australia to receive Baby Friendly Health Initiative accreditation according to World Health Organisation guidelines and is the only hospital in the state providing new mothers and their babies the acclaimed Mothercarer postnatal support service
