History

History
Established in 1910 Swedish has grown over the last 100 years to become the largest most comprehensive nonprofit health provider in the Greater Seattle area On September 1 2010 Stevens Hospital joined the Swedish family and became SwedishEdmonds Together we are creating an innovative regional healthcare delivery network that will provide more local services while giving residents greater access to the latest medical treatments and the comprehensive services of the Swedish system

The SwedishEdmonds story began in 1958 when a core group of peoplephysicians business people and concerned citizensrealized that the rapidly growing Snohomish County needed a local accessible hospital In 1959 the Womens Auxiliary was formed Women from the community went doortodoor raising money for the soontobe Stevens Memorial Hospital

Conceived by community members funded by community members and approved by community members Stevens became a reality when in November of 1962 the voters of Snohomish County passed the initiative establishing Snohomish County Public Hospital District No 2

Construction of the 110bed facility in Edmonds began in February of 1963 The building was completed 11 months later Named after Isaac Ingalls Stevens the first Governor of the Washington Territory the 2 million health care facility was a model of modern hospital technology Stevens Memorial Hospital began with 200 employees and a few dozen physicians The building opened its doors on Jan 30 1964 The first baby born at SwedishEdmonds came one hour after opening and we have been serving the community ever since

Over the years Stevens expanded and remodeled as the community grew and the need became greater By 1989 the hospitals bed capacity had grown to 217 In 1990 Snohomish County voters passed a 25 million bond for physical improvements This meant Stevens could continue to enhance services for the patients of Snohomish County Such enhancements have included the opening of the Sleep Center Center for Wound Healing amp Hyperbarics and the Stevens Pavilion Each year changes are made technologies are updated and service is provided to thousands of community members

Stevens and Swedish began working together in 1991 and eventually partnered to offer cardiology and oncology services These serviceline partnerships allowed the organizations to get to know each other and deliver an excellent local service to the community In February 2009 the organizations entered into a partnership agreement that became official on September 1 2010 renaming Stevens Hospital SwedishEdmonds

While SwedishEdmonds has gone through many changes and enhancements through the years one thing that has never changed is our commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of the community through local highquality and compassionate health care services

SwedishEdmonds is proud to serve our community through exceptional and personalized care
