Description

These are just some of the problems striking those with Alzheimers Disease and other forms of dementia Imagine entire portions of your memory disappearing unpredictably and you will begin to understand some of the fear frustration and powerlessness caused by these debilitating diseases of the mind We believe that preserving the dignity of our residents and surrounding them with understanding and love is central to their care This approach not only helps those suffering from dementia but eases the burden of care and feeling of helplessness often experienced by family and friends

The Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion is a facility specializing in the care of people with dementia We provide care through all stages of this condition from the earliest to the most advanced Since we opened in 1982 as a traditional seniors care facility our role has changed considerably Weve adapted and grown with the challenge of caring for seniors with dementia surrounding them with understanding and love

But love is not enough It cannot provide the funding we need to continue this valuable work While government funding through the Capital Health Region makes provisions for our day to day operations it is not enough to allow us to create an environment that reflects the latest knowledge in dementia care Establishing small homelike settings is particularly valuable for our residents and particularly costly for us Fortunately through fundraising by the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion Foundation we have been able to provide many comforts for our residents including therapeutic gardens home furnishings and a van for transportation

We are proud of our facility which has attracted the attention of dementia experts from around the world and are eager to continue to provide the best care possible for our residents
