History

Founded in 1870 Childrens National Medical Center is the nations second oldest pediatric hospital The Childrens Hospital facility of today is an iconic institution built in 1977 in the northwest quadrant of Washington DC that provides superior pediatric healthcare to the region and beyond

In its second century Childrens recognized its potential role as a world leader in pediatric science and began to create an internationally known research community In 1989 Childrens leadership conceived and developed a strategic plan that resulted in the formation of a separate entity called Childrens National Medical Center Research which was later changed to Childrens Research Institute CRI

By the invitation of Gordon Avery MD professor emeritus and first chief operations officer of CRI an external group of research scientists led by Dr David Karzon MD recommended that Childrens recruit nationally known scientists with research interests in molecular biology and genetics

By 1991 Drs Stephan Ladisch MD Mary Callaghan Rose PhD and Christie Holland were hired for their expertise in the areas of molecular biology genetics and immunology respectively In 1998 Mark L Batshaw MD became the first director of the CRI and Dr Ladisch became the first scientific director The years that followed would prove to be ones of extreme growth

Today CRI houses a community of more than 300 scientists technicians and trainees from around the world with national and international reputations in 180000 square feet of laboratory space The CRI Board of Directors is an internationally recognized group of leaders from academic research industrial and philanthropic sectors CRI is one of the top funded pediatric research institutions in the United States and its diverse grant portfolio boasts an impressive 50 percent increase in annual total grant support from the NIH between the years 2000 to 2006 as well as an increasingly strong portfolio of funding from agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Defense and private donors and foundational supporters This impressive record illustrates expanded growth from 14 million in support in 1995 to 68 million in 2005 a near fivefold increase in 10 years
