History

Mercy History
Mercy was founded in 1918 as Queens Hospital during a devastating flu epidemic The original hospital had 25 patient beds and was located on the corner of Congress and State Streets in Portland

Mercy Hospital at 144 State Street opened in 1943 and was named for the Sisters of Mercy who had assumed full responsibility for the new hospital It had a major addition in 1952 and was then renovated in the 1980s However over the years Mercy faced many challenges such as a growing population and dramatically different medical technologies and eventually exceeded the capabilities of the State Street facility

On September 22 2008 Mercy opened a new hospital on the Fore River The Fore River campus is 42 acres compared to three acres at State Street and includes a 16 million 80000 square foot medical office building and a 495 million 151000 square foot Phase I hospital which houses diagnostic imaging laboratory inpatient and outpatient surgical services and The Birthplace The new medical office building and hospital is Phase I of a twophase project that will eventually relocate all of Mercy Hospitals services from the State Street campus to the campus The State Street campus will continue as a fullservice hospital and will continue to operate Mercys only 24hour Emergency Department The full relocation of all Mercy services to the Fore River campus is anticipated well in time for Mercys 100year anniversary in 2018 Phase II will add an addition to the hospital that will include the Emergency Department inpatient medical services additional surgery suites the Critical Care Unit and acute care beds
