Over the years inadequate development of human resources and infrastructure and a difficult terrain have resulted in gross under delivery of quality eye care in UP especially to the poor To overcome this problem RGCT initially joined hands with Aravind Eye Care System AECS to develop the Indira Gandhi Eye Hospitals and Research Centres IGEHRCs to provide worldclass eye care infrastructure and eliminate needless blindness in Northern India Today IGEHRC operations are run by RGCTs own qualified staff IGEHRC is supported by a team of highly trained deeply motivated and extremely committed medical paramedical and managerial staff Each member of the IGEHRC hospitals whatever the nature of their responsibilities is oriented towards total patient service

Currently two hospitals are successfully operating in UP a secondary level facility in Amethi and a tertiary level hospital in Lucknow Unlike the family owned and run hospitals and clinics that bound especially in smaller towns and villages the IGEHRC hospitals are professionally managed They are run by a team of expert administrators with multidisciplinary training who ensure that the hospitals function effectively and that the available resources are put to optimal use

The IGEHRC hospitals follow robust systems that are not only patient centric but are aimed at ensuring seamless efficiency in service delivery by the hospital staff For instance as a result of these streamlined systems a surgeon at the IGEHRC hospital performs more than 2000 cataract surgeries a year which is five times the number performed by an average Indian ophthalmologist Standardised clinical operating and administrative protocols and procedures are responsible for the quality and consistency of the service available at IGEHRC hospitals Best practices are achieved at all times as these protocols and procedures ensure that every task is exactly replicable every time it is performed
