The Mallersdorfer sisters and Dr Paul Josef Nardini

The recent history of the diocese of Speyer knows many priests religious and lay people who have struggled with a special commitment to the social need Probably the greatest impact history in the 19th Century had made the Pirmasens pastor and dean Dr Paul Josef Nardini whose beatification on 22102006 at Speyer

Nardini 07251821 in Germersheim in the Palatinate Pirmasens 27011862 was already in his lifetime as the quotFather of the Poorquot When the young priest who himself came from a poor family after studying in Munich in 1851 in Speyer and Pirmasens took his place prevailed in many of the young industrial city poverty and hunger misery drove many residents to peddling and begging neglected the children Nardini young women gathered around him who wanted to be socially committed Against some opposition he founded in 1855 a sister communities which he called quotPoor Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Familyquot In 1856 were from Pirmasens from the first sisters to be sent to other places Palatinate Their job was in the poor and the sick and the education of neglected children Nardini died in 1862 aged just 40 years from pneumonia The grave of Paul Josef Nardini can be visited in the chapel of Nardinihauses in Pirmasens the founding place of the Order There the sisters have a memorial with a permanent exhibition about the life and work of the Apostle social set up
