come to be

The hospital was established in 1948 by a group of local doctors who foresaw the fact that the Nelson region was always going to be too small to attract quality surgeons There was a risk that the region would be marginalised and that local people would not get an adequate medical service without travelling out of the region By establishing the hospital it allowed surgeons to have a local private practice which encouraged them to stay in the region Without the Manuka Street Trust Hospital we would not enjoy the quality of surgical services both in the public system and as private patients that we have here today
