Founded in 1881 the hospital initially opened its doors to provide care to poor immigrants Michael Reese has continued its mission over the past 109 years to provide quality compassionate care to all members of the community especially the underserved During its exemplary era as a major teaching and research medical center the hospital prepared students of all disciplines to be tomorrows leaders

In 1998 Envision Hospital Corporation created a novel structure for the management of Michael Reese Hospital which includes involving physicians in major decisions and strategic planning for the delivery of patient care This model successfully transitioned the hospital from being financially compromised to preserving Michael Reeses tertiary care status and it long tradition of teaching research communityservice and innovation
