The MetroHealth System is one of the largest most comprehensive health care providers in Northeast Ohio serving the medical needs of the Greater Cleveland community since 1837 More than 400 primary care and specialty care physicians practice within The MetroHealth System Affiliated with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1914 MetroHealth is a center for medical research and education with all active staff physicians holding CWRU faculty appointments Every year MetroHealth Medical Center provides care to nearly 29000 inpatients and delivers roughly 3000 newborns More than 790000 visits are recorded each year in the medical centers outpatient centers and patient visits to the emergency department exceed 92000

History

History of MetroHealth
Founded in 1837 MetroHealth has the longest history of any Cleveland health care organization The name has changed over time from City Hospital to City Infirmary to Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital to The MetroHealth System but the mission has remained the same to improve the health of our community

Back in 1837 that mission drove our forebearers to centralize health care services for people suffering from the physical and mental distress associated with poverty smallpox and cholera Today we remain the safety net for the most vulnerable among us but we have taken on much greater responsibilities and redefined what it means to be a leader in community health

We are Clevelands largest provider of communitybased health services and the regions leader in providing critical care and rehabilitation services Our vision is to be a national leader in public health by developing programs that serve as a national model in improving access to high quality and costeffective care
