History
Coolenberg has a rich and colourful history in the Hastings dating back to the 1800s In 1857 James Butler for the price of eight pounds two shillings and nine pence purchased two acres two roods and 34 perches of land on Glebe Road In 1860 he built his home on the site and called it Coolenberg Butler was a fine cabinet maker an auctioneer horse breeder and mortician He was a prominent citizen of the township serving as mayor from 18931894 as well as Presbyterian Church elder and member of the Masonic Lodge
Over the years Butler established a substantial vineyard at Coolenberg producing a large of quality wine He married ellen Blair who died at Coolenberg on 15 Feb 1902 aged 67 Butlers son Alexander Blair Butler built a mahogony home called The Grange on another site of the property where the present Grange Medical Centre stands
Coolenberg has a architectural style best described as VictorianGeorgian It is a large singlestory cottage with a pyramidal corrugated iron roof and skillion verandahs The original singlestorey dwelling section is built of sandstone brick the outer walls faced with stucco and marked to resenble sandstone block the exterior walls are 14 inches thick the inner ones nine inches High 10ft ceilings cedar joinery and mantelpieces and polished timber floors add to the charm
Between 1969 and 1975 additions were made providing kitchen laundry bathroom and additional accommodation
Coolenberg Restaurant was established in October 1995 and the reception centre in September 1996
The current transformation sees Coolenberg developed into a day procedure surgical centre The front four rooms of the building being heritage listed have remained untouched but converted into consulting rooms and recovery bays all of which meet the standards required by NSW Health to enable Coolenberg to become a licensed facility under the Private Hospital and Day Procedure Centres Act
Coolenberg Clinic will cater not only to patients undergoing cosmetic surgery but to all types of day surgery including general surgery skin surgery gynaecology orthopaedic and urological surgery
