History

At the turn of the century the only emergency room in Susquehanna County was the baggage room of the Susquehanna Depot Workers for the Erie Railroad repair shops were treated for their injuries there

By 1904 the city fathers recognized the need for a treatment center to care for the Erie Railroad workers and their families The Susquehanna City Hospital with an availability of 14 beds was established in the Gaylord Curtis home on East Main Street Since the property had been donated by a local businessman Simon H Barnes the name of the hospital was changed soon after to pay tribute to this generous man

In 1965 a new facility was built on Turnpike Street In 1970 a skilled nursing wing was added and the name was changed to the BarnesKasson County Hospital to honor a bequest from the estate of Myron Kasson of Montrose PA

In order to serve rural Susquehanna County The BarnesKasson County Hospital has established four regional health centers in Hallstead Lenox New Milford and Susquehanna The regional health centers insure accessible health care to these communities

In 1975 The BarnesKasson Home Health Services were established to provide skilled nursing services for the homebound including nursing care occupational therapy physical therapy health care training amp education and a healthy beginnings program for mothers and their infants

Today the hospital maintains strong ties with area businesses and develops effective programs to meet their needs though its Industrial Health Services Program In addition the hospital is an active health information and education resource for the entire county
